WATALAM means “Alone” in Poqomam — a name that reflects how this journey first began. The project started as a personal initiative by its founder, Lesli Tahón, a Guatemalan nature lover, entrepreneur, and creator of community-based projects, after the end of a previous tourism project that, unfortunately, did not continue. From that difficult moment came the inspiration to begin again with a stronger purpose: creating meaningful travel experiences that support local communities and respect the natural landscapes of Guatemala.
What began as a personal vision has grown through close collaboration with dear friends from local communities, who have joined the project as partners. Together, they co-create and lead unique, meaningful experiences that reflect their knowledge, traditions, and deep connection to the land.
Based around Antigua Guatemala, Watalam is a community-based ecotourism project that invites travelers to explore the beautiful hills, forests, and villages surrounding the region. Each experience has been thoughtfully created to reveal special corners of the countryside while connecting visitors with the people who call these places home.
Through hiking and camping adventures guided alongside local community guides, travelers have the opportunity to share time with local families, learn about everyday life, and experience Guatemala beyond the typical tourist path. Along the way, many guests naturally practice their Spanish while building genuine connections with the communities they visit.
At its heart, Watalam believes that travel should be meaningful — protecting nature, supporting local livelihoods, and creating authentic cultural exchange. More than just a tour, Watalam is an invitation to slow down, explore responsibly, and discover the real Guatemala.
